Most of the deliveries at the Acowa health Centre III in the Amuria district, eastern Uganda are currently being conducted using torches, a health authority has revealed.

Ambrose Ojuu, acting medical assistant at The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO), says according to the assessments carried out by TASO, the Acowa maternity ward not only lacks lighting systems but is also short of delivery kits.

Ojuu also reveals that the midwives are using improvised torches to help deliver mothers.

According to Ojuu, TASO is looking at installing delivery items and pressure bulbs within the facility in efforts to improve maternal deliveries.

At the moment, the facility only has one new delivery bed, Ojuu notes.
