HIV prevalence shoots up in Amuria, eastern Uganda

Amuria district in eastern Uganda marked World AIDS Day on Saturday (1 December) with the revelation by health experts that the HIV prevalence in the area has risen from 6.2% to 6.4%.

Amuria district in eastern Uganda marked World AIDS Day on Saturday (1 December) with the revelation by health experts that the HIV prevalence in the area has risen from 6.2% to 6.4%.

Stella Akiror, the district health educator in Amuria, said the prevalence rate is particularly alarming because it is high among married couples.

She attributed the spread of the virus to early marriages, gender based violence and uncontrolled alcohol consumption.

Uganda’s national HIV prevalence stands at 7.4%.
