The new Key Correspondent (KC) team was selected in September 2016. This team consists of 20 citizen journalists is based across eight countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Namely; Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia and South Africa. Identifying as or allies to the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) and Sex Worker (SW) communities respectively; the KCs connect with and mine their communities to unearth stories of ordinary folk.
These are stories of human rights violations often experienced in these communities but rarely recounted because of stigma and discrimination; stories of celebration often left uncelebrated, and everyday stories we can all relate to.
Stigma and discrimination constantly leveled at these communities leave them at a disadvantage. They are shunned from their families and communities, religious gatherings; they are turned away from public health facilities and work opportunities; constantly bullied, teased and shamed in the school environment – it’s dehumanising. A consistent attack on safety and security, identity and dignity. We hope our stories will contribute to the enclaves of equal rights work across the continent.
There’s a revolution brewing. A change taking place. Don’t be left behind.
