A new block is under construction at the Uganda Cancer Institute. When finished, it is expected to have a 200-bed capacity and reduce congestion at the old facility located at the treatment facility and the institute.

According to Dr. Jackson Orem, the Director of the Uganda Cancer Institute “The  six storied building will house two cancer theatres, wards for the patients, Intensive Care Units and storage of tissue for research and future reference.”

The three-story integrated cancer training and treatment facility, measures nearly 60,000 square feet (5,600 m2). The new building, will be called the Uganda Cancer Institute/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Clinic and Training Institute.

It is a project of the UCI/Hutchinson Center Cancer Alliance, a collaboration of UCI and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, USA.

Currently, the Institute has a 45-bed capacity which serves the whole country, trying to meet the needs of approximately, 5,000 cancer patients.
